Many countries around the world are suffering from traffic jam created by the increase numbers of cars in their streets. This is reflected directly in increasing the number of accidents and casualties. As driver’s safety is considered important, most of the vehicle manufacturers are working to increase the safety standards and integrate them into the newer models. Unfortunately, the new safety technologies are not cheap, and not all vehicle models come equipped with it. It can be found mostly in the new luxury vehicles but not in economic vehicle models that are representing the majority of the vehicles. After all, every road user is considered important and people’s lives cannot be measured in term of money. In this paper, we are proposing a traffic management system based on cloud Vehicle Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) and smartphone. We are highlighting some the safety technologies using VANET and pointing out VANET advantages and some of its limitations. We present a solution to overcome VANET limitations. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed solution in vehicles is discussed. The proposed solution is affordable, reliable, and accessible to everyone. It will enhance driver safety and will contribute to the formation of smart transportation system and smart cities. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.
