The policy aims to provide the university with a guideline to ensure best practices for complying with the resolution No. 2018-731-7 for reducing the use of the non-biodegradable plastic products on campus and to be committed to environmental sustainability and provide a model for the community.

Plastic products are used widely the University of Bahrain different activities, which ranges from a Single-use plastic food service, plastic bottles and plastic bags. The Kingdom of Bahrain issued a resolution No. 2018-731-7, In respect of plastic bags and other plastic consumables regulating and cutting uses prohibiting the provision on the local market of non-biodegradable plastic. Scope/Application

The policy will be applied to:

  1. All students and staff at the university
  2. All university on-campus and off-campus activities
  3. All university catering outlets, retail outlets and vending machines.

Policy Statement and Principles

  1. Implement an effective management strategy to reduce plastic bags consumption and waste.
  2. Promote alternate for single-use plastic bags, for example, biodegradable single-use plastic bags, recycled material, paper or fabrics.
  3. Support innovative recycling opportunities for plastic waste.
  4. Support community initiatives to remove plastic waste from the environment.
  5. The Policy, accountability and evaluation
  6. The University shall develop indicators and measures of success in the implementation of this policy.
  7. A committee formed by the president shall provide an annual report to the university council on the process toward the established indicators and measure of the Plastic Policy.
