The laboratories were established to be a reference for the Kingdom of Bahrain in the field of renewable energy, focusing on bioenergy, solar energy and wind energy. It consists of 4 major labs which are PV testing lab, Biomass lab, meteorology lab and outdoor research Lab. These labs are conducting research with collaboration with three universities in the UK. The project with the University of Loughborough University focuses on the lead capacity building of future research and innovation experts in sustainable energy and water technologies, thus developing local expertise to design and operate such systems and reducing reliance on foreign expertise.
Research in renewable seawater desalination is conducted with Aston University while the project with the University of Oxford in investigating the enhancement of desalination membranes. These projects provide well-established research activities that can be linked directly to energy efficiency (SDG 7) and water availability (SDG 6). It also bridges research experience between the UK and the Kingdom of Bahrain (SDG 17).
Within the Kingdom of Bahrain, the laboratories have collaboration with the ministry of industry, Ministry of Transportation & Telecommunication, Bahrain Petroleum Company and Sustainable energy center.
The Labs also provides services to the community by offering PV testing facilities as well as workshops and training courses in renewable energy and systems installations.
