The Legal Clinic at the University of Bahrain (UOB) has organized an event entitled «People with Determination» on 3rd of December 2019 to coincide with the international day of disabled persons, which takes place on the 3rd of December of every year. Professor Riyad Hamzah, president of the University, said that “ This event ensures that in the foreseeable future we will see a group of graduates who have the necessary awareness to ascertain that people of this category receive their full rights, and that will enable them to involve more in the community first and to contribute in building the future”. The president of UOB stressed the importance of “creating a friendly university environment that understands the needs of people with determination, fulfil their requirements and provide them with what they need with great generosity and love”, and this is what UOB keen on. The ceremony was attended by the Vice President of the National Institute for Human Rights, the deans, members of law faculty and a large number of students especially those with determination and their relatives. For his part, Dr. Mohammed Al Mannai, member of the Board of Trustees of the National Institute for the Disabled, stressed the importance of this day as it is an opportunity to review the national policies that are applied to this category, which directly concern about 25% of the Bahraini society who have relatives with disabilities. On the other hand, Al-Mannai said: «Although several achievements have been made in the area of empowerment of people with disabilities, some laws have not found their way into implementation, such as granting disabled people or one of their parents rest hours during work.» “This initiative came to stand on the attention that is given by the Kingdom of Bahrain for the people with determination through enacting laws and regulations that ensure their integration into the society, whether in education or work. This group has gained more support within the framework of the reforming project of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of the country.” Dr. Wafa Janahi, the director of the Legal Clinic and Human Rights Centre, said. She added: «We wanted to highlight the rights of this group and the university’s experience in integrating the people with determination among the university community, where the university is keen to provide facilities for them to help them in showing their potential and capabilities and contribute to the development process.”
