A team of female students, including two students from the University of Bahrain, won first place, among 12 participating teams, in the Bahraini Women’s Science Hackathon. The Hackathon was launched by the Supreme Council for Women in cooperation with Bahrain Polytechnic and Brinc Batelco IoT Hub, on 20 October 2019 with the aim to encourage the talents and capabilities of Bahraini women, enhance these talents and increase female representation in STEM fields. The hackathon was held as part of activities and events associated with the Bahraini Women’s Day, which was dedicated this year to celebrating women in the field of higher education and future sciences.
The winning team developed an application that monitors the causes of and predicts the location of oil spills in the waters of the Arabian Gulf by satellite and through the use of artificial intelligence. The application has implications on marine life and the safety of individuals.
