On 28th of October 2019, the College of Law at the University of Bahrain organized a panel discussion in collaboration with the French Embassy on “the role of alternative methods in settlement disputes resolution in French law”, presented by judge, Anne Rosenzweig, from France. The panel session, which was open to public, discussed several types of dispute resolution including arbitration, mediation and conciliation. It has been emphasized that the alternative method can be conceived as an aid to the voluntary execution of the decision of justice. Rosenzweig said that the alternative method in France is provided for by the law of 2019 which allows the judge specialized in family matters – this time necessarily with the agreement of the parties – to order a mediation in the decision ruling definitively on the terms of parental authority. This is post-sentencing mediation in family matters. Anne Rosenzweig reviewed the relevant French and European legislations in the context of alternative dispute resolution in terms of family matters. The aims of the panel are: 1- to share experiences between academics and lawyers dealing with commercial, workplace and family disputes and, 2- to recommend the best practice in the field of alternative dispute resolution to be followed by the lawyers in Bahrain. 3- to review the national policies in order to accommodate with the most successful international practices All in all, at the end of the session, questions were asked and there was room for further discussions.
