On April 29th, the English Language Center, under the patronage of H.E. Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, sponsored a performance of Pirates of Penzance at Al Raja School as a community service project. The ELC drama team transported the set which included a 15 foot pirate ship and other materials designed by students for the live performance which was open to all high school students from 9th to 12th grades. Around 105 school students attended the live performance. The ELC drama team also held a training session with the Al Raja drama team to discuss costume design, script writing, sound engineering and creating print materials to promote the drama performance such as banners, posters and programmes. After the performance, the high school students participated in a question and answer session. Some of the students had read the script in advance to prepare for the performance, so they had many interesting questions about the scenes and main ideas of the story. Themes such as honor, sacrifice, friendship, betrayal and irony were discussed as students shared their ideas and reactions to the Pirates of Penzance story. The drama involves a young man who is accidentally apprenticed as a pirate (instead of a pilot) and the complications that arise from his unique Leap Year birthday. The story brings to life events that include an eccentric Major General who is trying to save his four lovely daughters and a kind hearted Pirate King with his band of pirates that have a soft spot for orphans. The live performance was an excellent community service activity both to promote drama and storytelling but also to help students develop their English language skills. Overall, the ELC Drama Team had a wonderful time sharing their skills both in acting and as backstage crew to encourage the high school students to get involved in drama to develop their own talents and leadership ability.
