On October 15, 2019, the Legal Clinic and Human Rights Center at the University of Bahrain held a panel discussion on ‘International Legal Standards in Criminal Justice’ in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The event was held at Zain E-learning Center at the Sakhir Campus. Faculty members and law students from both University of Bahrain and Royal University of Women (RUW) attended and participated in the event which was open for the public, in the presence of Mr. Stefano Pettinato, the UNDP Resident Representative in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and Mr. Domenico Bellato, Italy’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain. Dr. Wafa Janahi, Director of the Legal Clinic and Human Rights Center, welcomed the participants and underlined the Legal Clinic role as a link between the College of Law at the UOB and the labor market. The UNDP Resident Representative at the Kingdom of Bahrain conveyed his hopes for further cooperation between the University of Bahrain and UNDP. The discussion was held between the two international experts, Dr. Carlos Castresana Fernándes, a UNDP consultant, attorney and investigating judge, as well as, Dr. Nicola Lettieri, judge and hoc of the European court of human rights, and judge of the special tribune of Lebanon. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Pasquala Borea, the dean of the College of Law at RUW. The speakers discussed their life experiences as well as significant issues, such as; terrorism, human rights protection, and international jurisdiction. The discussion was followed by questions and an honoring session. The event contributed in enriching the student’s understanding of international criminal law, international jurisdiction, the importance of protecting human rights, and terrorism in international law. Furthermore, the event was a platform to discuss the different policies with regard to the implementation of the international legal standards in criminal justice with international judges, NGOs and national authorities as well as to recommend the best practice(s) to be adopted by the national authorities.
